Descartes' words have always been enigmatic to me. This simple sentiment, "I think, therefore I am," carries with it a mixed bag of emotions. On the one hand, how wonderful that humans can feel grounded in the assurance of their own existence! Then again, we are a species burdened with the knowledge of its own mortality. Self awareness is a blessing and a curse. This is the duality I hoped to highlight with the piece. The macaronic text emphasizes the two sides of that coin, eventually reconciling themselves in the more peaceful interpretation. But, the whispering voices still linger on.
